HELPFUL TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL
Each term we will provide you with the name and author of a book that we will be focusing that supports your child on their journey to becoming ready for school. This is by no mean mandatory for you to do, however we have lots of families who ask us for tips and suggestion regarding how they can support their child to be as prepared as possible for school.
The teachers at Orchard Early Learning Centre have developed some school readiness activities that you can do at home with your child that are fun, engaging, relaxing but most importantly all about getting ready for big school. By reading the book this term, Starting School by Jane Godwin, you will be reinforce the learning that is happening at Orchard and helping build knowledge, memory, and skills. If you do not have a copy of the book, the links to the YouTube reading are here: https://youtu.be/ss6dzoHNQSE or you can go to the library with your child and borrow this terms book.
Helpful tips for preparing for Primary School.
Starting primary school is an exciting milestone for both children and parents. Here are some tips to help make the transition smooth and positive:
1. Foster a Positive Attitude
Talk about school in a positive light. Share your own school experiences and highlight the fun aspects like making friends and learning new things.
2. Visit the School
If possible, take a tour of the school before the first day. Familiarising your child with their new environment can help ease anxiety.
3. Establish a Routine
Start a consistent daily routine well before school begins. This includes regular bedtimes, morning schedules, and homework times to help your child adapt.
4. Practice Basic Skills
Encourage independence by practicing essential skills like dressing themselves, using the bathroom, and basic hygiene.
5. Promote Social Skills
Arrange playdates or group activities to help your child develop social skills and build friendships before school starts.
6. Encourage Communication
Teach your child how to express their feelings and ask questions. Open communication will help them feel more secure in sharing any concerns about school.
7. Set Up a Learning Space
Create a designated space at home for homework and study. Make it comfortable and stocked with necessary supplies.
8. Read Together
Read to your child regularly and encourage them to read on their own. This fosters a love for reading and enhances their literacy skills.
9. Stay Involved
Participate in school activities, attend parent-teacher meetings, and volunteer when possible to show your child that you value their education.
10. Be Patient and Supportive
Understand that adjustment takes time. Be there to listen and support your child through any challenges they face.
11. Discuss Expectations
Talk about what to expect on the first day, including how they will get there, what they will do, and who will be there.
12. Encourage Curiosity
Promote a love for learning by encouraging your child to ask questions and explore their interests.
13. Stay Calm and Positive
Your demeanour can influence how your child feels. Stay calm and positive to help instil confidence in them.
By creating a supportive environment and fostering independence, you can help your child feel excited and ready for their new adventure in primary school!
